Aircraft Carpet Cleaning: Choosing the Right Method and Product

Cabin carpets are one of the most frequently overlooked surfaces in aircraft maintenance, and yet they face some of the most demanding conditions of any interior surface. Between every turnaround, they absorb foot traffic, spills, and biological soiling, all while needing to meet stringent airline appearance standards and, in some cases, formal approval requirements.

Getting carpet cleaning right isn’t just about the product. It’s about the method, the chemistry, and understanding what your operation actually requires.

Three approaches to aircraft carpet cleaning
There is no single correct method. The right approach depends on turnaround time, available equipment, chemical approvals, and the airline’s own operational procedures.

Inject/Extract (pre-spray method): A carpet cleaning fluid is pre-sprayed onto the carpet, then extracted using a water-fed inject/extract machine. This is a thorough, well-established method, but leaves behind some moisture, which needs to be managed carefully in a cabin environment.

Ready-to-use chemical in machine tank: The cleaning chemical is loaded directly into the machine’s reservoir and applied without a separate rinsing step. This reduces process time and suits tight turnarounds.

Foam-based cleaning: A foam solution is applied to the carpet, allowed to dry, and then vacuumed up, removing soiling without introducing water into the cabin. This method is particularly attractive where moisture management is a concern.

Product approvals – what to look for
Some airlines and MRO operators require carpet cleaning products to hold AMS 1630 or AMS 1636 approval. These aerospace material specifications set standards for cleaning solutions used on aircraft interiors. Not all products on the market carry these approvals, so it is important to verify compliance before specifying a product for a given operation.
